Our Achievements
The Foundation has successfully accomplished and is continuing to realize its mandate in a helping capacity. Below are our current achievements and ongoing pilot projects.
Education
The Foundation has successfully established a scholarship, “The Kaicombey Foundation Scholarship Scheme”. We have provided sponsorships, grants and financial aids to children in both primary and secondary schools in the province, from diverse communities and family backgrounds in Sierra Leone. This year, 2009, we are providing financial aid to some youths and children from primary to secondary schools, college and medical schools in the eastern part of Sierra Leone. However, only very limited financial aid is currently available.
Challenges: The demand for financial aid to pursue quality early education and further higher education is very great in Sierra Leone. Scholarships, bursaries and any other financial aids are welcome to support girl-child education, and schooling for youths and young people to rebuild the nation.
Employment Solutions for Disadvantaged Youths
This current project is keeping the young people engaged in skilled training. The Foundation have has established a carpentry centre that is used to give skilled training in carpentry young people who could not go through formal education. This training has made dozens of youths gainfully self-employment and will foster self-reliance.
Challenges: The challenge is huge. The empowerment and young people through vocational skills training need urgent attention in post war Sierra Leone. However, greater funding is needed for institutional support.
Food Security, Small Business Enterprise and poverty Alleviation
The Foundation distributed food aid to vulnerable patients who cannot afford it while hospitalized – for instance in the Nixon Memorial Methodist Hospital in the eastern part of Kailahun District.
Challenges: Resources for microcredit facility and small scale vegetable backyard gardening is yet to be realized for women to be effectively engaged for self-reliance.
Health
A pilot community mobile health service established: The Kaicombey Community Mobile Health Clinic is currently involved in public health education on targeted communities. However, the team is not equipped now to carry out an effective outreach. There is need for equipment and funding to make this possible.
The Kaicombey Medical Emergency Fund: This fund has been established, but currently gives free medical service to a minimal number of children and expectant mothers because of financial challenges. The fund is used to pay 50% or 100% of the costs of care.. It is specifically established to complement the efforts of other organizations and the government.
Apparently, there is great need and popular desire for this pilot project. Once established, the success of this pilot project will be replicated in other parts of the country based on the availability of funding/resources.
Challenges: Sufficient financial resources to sustain and expand services to address the acute medical needs of the underprivileged is currently a challenge.
